when fitting a fire you have to comply to regulations which means you have to have a visable and physical barrier between yourself and the fire which is often the hearth. Some people want the fireplace to as compact as possible visually which is were the use of a glass hearth comes in. Although it does work its not suitable for everyone especially the completely transparent ones like here as small particles of dust and dirt can creep underneath and is hard to get out.
